James McLurkin works with swarm robots at Rice University, and his unique work on robot communication has landed him on PBS’s “Nova,” in addition to speaking engagements at events like TED and Singularity Summit.

In this interview, McLurkin discusses how swarm robots have been inspired by insect behavior – and exactly what swarm robots are best suited for. McLurkin argues that in many cases, a group of smaller, inexpensive robots can perform a job much better than a single, more capable robot. He also sheds light on when and how swarm robots might become a part of everyday life and industry in the coming decades.
