FSR-2015

FSR, the biannual single track meeting on field and service robotics, is on now in Toronto. Exactly one year after our first mission to Namibia for the SAVMAP project, a team made up of Drone Adventures, EPFL’s LASIG lab and Kuzikus Wildlife Reserve came together again in the Southern African savanna from May 16 to 23, 2015 to apply last year’s findings and push the limits of civilian drone use for nature conservation applications one step further.

Sky_Futures_FAA_Exemption_SUAV_Coalition

Sky-Futures, a UK-based company offering drone inspection services to the global oil and gas industry, through their Houston office, was awarded an FAA exemption allowing their drones to fly in US air space.

Most Drone Adventures missions to date have involved using eBee mapping drones to assist humanitarian projects. However in recent months we have taken part in an increasing number of environmental conservation projects too, such as our recent Namibia mission.

A group of civilians called АРМІЯ SOS, or Army SOS, released aerial video last Friday of the war-ravaged Donetsk Airport, which they obtained using a small, fixed-wing drone. It was possible to extract and process frames from the video in order to generate more information about damage to the Donetsk Airport.

OpenRov

The OpenROV submersible is a low cost and open source kit designed for exploration and education. Originally launched on Kickstarter in 2012 it has now grown into a dedicated global community launching missions everywhere from Hawaii to the UK.

The second phase of an ambitious project to gather valuable information on ocean processes and marine life using a fleet of innovative marine robots has just reached its conclusion. Co-ordinated by the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), the Exploring Ocean Fronts project took place off southwest England and saw the largest deployment of robotic vehicles ever attempted in UK waters 

KhuranaDuring her internship as part of the Gnome Outreach Program for Women, Tashwin Khurana developed a tool for downloading data from the OpenStreetMap database to produce a corresponding world file for Gazebo. Tashwin focused on importing roads, traffic signals, and buildings, and provided support for a new shape type: the extruded polyline. The two-dimensional shape is defined with a series of points that can be extruded to form a solid object, which can be very useful for visualizing buildings and similar constructions.

The latest project to take advantage of the benefits of marine drones – the Robotic Exploration of Ocean Fronts by British National Oceanographic Centre (NOC) – is one of largest and most ambitious unmanned ocean exploration missions to date.

Last month at IROS the SV-ROS team Maxed-Out won the Microsoft Kinect Challenge. In this post Mathieu Labbé describes the mapping approach the team used to help them win.
